Projects

The Resistance to Metaphor project consists of two postdoc projects and four PhD projects. The postdoc projects intend to develop a theoretical framework and the PhD projects look at resistance to metaphor in different contexts.

Postdoc projects:

Testing resistance to metaphor

Topic and scope The goal of this postdoc project is to test a model of metaphor resistance, a model that shows which conditions induce resistance to metaphor and how these conditions relate to each other. For constructing and testing this model, the effects of argumentative characteristics of metaphors and of characteristics of metaphor receivers on resistance will be examined by means of three experimental studies.
Duration 2017-2018
Research question What makes people resist one metaphor, but not the other?
Method Experimental research
Status Postdoc project in progress

Modelling resistance to metaphor in argumentative discourse

Topic and scope This postdoc project will develop a theoretical framework for analysing the functions of metaphors in argumentative discourse and how they can trigger resistance. To this end, the project will integrate insights from Steen’s three-dimensional model for metaphor, the concept of genre and the pragma-dialectical theory of argumentation. The research first determines what functions metaphors can have in an argumentative discussion and then examines what kind of resistance these argumentative uses of metaphor can evoke.
Duration 2017-2018
Research question What functions can metaphors have in argumentative discourse and how can these argumentatively used metaphors trigger resistance?
Method Theoretical analysis, case studies
Status Postdoc project in progress

PhD projects:

Resistance to metaphor in science

Topic

and scope

The project investigates the argumentative functions of the computer metaphor of the brain/mind in cognitive science and philosophy of mind, as well the argumentative functions of the resistance elicited by the metaphor. It seeks to identify and map the diverse set of evaluative criteria that scholars draw upon in assessing the scientific and philosophical status of the metaphor.
Duration 2016-2020
Research question What are the argumentative functions of the computer metaphor of the mind/brain and of the resistance it elicits?
Method Qualitative case studies
Status PhD project in progress
Researcher and supervisors Researcher: Andreas Finsen

Supervisors: Gerard Steen, Jean Wagemans

Metaphor use in Chinese aphasia health care

Topic

and scope

The project probes into metaphor use in Chinese aphasic settings. Conversations with PWAs (people with aphasia) will be analyzed within the three-dimensional model of metaphor to see how they talk about their experiences and feelings with metaphors. Moreover, the project investigates whether PWAs resist to certain metaphors, like “aphasia/disability is less than whole”.
Duration 2016-2020
Research question How do PWAs talk about their experiences with metaphors? How do they interpret metaphors? When, how and why are metaphors resisted in aphasia context?
Method Corpus analysis, focus groups
Status PhD project in progress
Researcher and supervisors Researcher: Jie Fu

Supervisors: Gerard Steen, Zhen Pan

Funding CSC (China Scholarship Council)

Resistance to Metaphor in Government and Politics

Topic

and scope

This project investigates when, how and why metaphors are resisted in political discourse. It approaches resistance to metaphor as a form of counter-argumentation. In order to analyse and evaluate resistance to metaphor, insights from the three-dimensional model of metaphor will be combined with insights from the pragma-dialectical theory of argumentation.
Duration 2016-2020
Research question When, how and why are metaphors resisted in political discourse?
Method Corpus analysis, qualitative case studies
Status PhD project in progress
Researcher and supervisors Researcher: Kiki Renardel de Lavalette

Supervisors: Corina Andone, Gerard Steen

Funding NWO (The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research)

Resistance to war-related metaphors for cancer in public discourse

Topic and scope This project investigates how, when and why war-related metaphors for cancer are resisted in public discourse. It aims to reconstruct such resistance as a form of counter-argumentation that can be explained in terms of the three-dimensional model of metaphor and the pragma-dialectical approach to argumentation.

Duration 2016-2020
Research question When, how and why are war-related metaphors for cancer resisted in public discourse?
Method Corpus analysis, focus groups
Status PhD project in progress
